Is Edin Dzeko about to agree a new deal with City?
After a summer of speculation linking the Bosnian striker to a number of Bundesliga and Italian clubs, it appears the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini means Edin’s future looks likely to be with Blues – according to Sports Direct News.com, that is.
Hugh Southon reports: “Edin Dzeko will sit down with Manchester City in the next few weeks to discuss a new deal.
“New Blues boss Pellegrini announced over the weekend the 27-year-old will have a big part to play next season despite being linked with moves to both Borussia Dortmund and Napoli this summer.
“Dzeko has less than two years remaining on his current contract and City are keen to protect their longer-term interests in the £20 million rated player.”
Pellegrini’s comment that City defender Maicon would not be part of his squad for the new season adds weight to this morning’s ESPN story that the Brazilian is on the verge of a return to Serie A football.
Maicon played only a handful of games for the Blues last season and with two right-backs ahead of him in the queue for first-team football in the shape of Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaleta, it seems he may well move on.
ESPN report: "Former Inter Milan defender and Champions League winner Maicon is on the verge of returning to Serie A, with Roma set to complete a deal for the Manchester City full-back on Monday.
“The 31-year-old arrived in the Italian capital on Monday morning, posing for photographs outside the city's Fiumicino airport before being taken by club officials for a medical, after which he should put pen to paper on a two-year contract.”
Finally, in something of a hybrid news story, the International Business Times report that Spanish paper Marca are claiming Sevilla have turned down a bid from the Blues for star striker Alvaro Negredo.
Chandrashekar Srinivasan writes: “Sevilla are prepared to play hardball over a potential transfer for striker Alvaro Negredo, according to Marca.
“The La Liga club are negotiating with Manchester City over the sale of the 27-year-old Spain international and Pellegrini's new club have already had a €23m bid rejected.
“It is believed Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido is keen for his counterparts at the Etihad to pay at least €25m for the former Real Madrid youngster; although the full value of €28m would be preferred.
"City have released two of the four first team strikers they started the 2012/13 Premier League season with - Mario Balotelli joined AC Milan in January and Carlos Tevez moved to Serie A champions Juventus this summer.
"This leaves only Argentina international Sergio Agüero and Bosnian Dzeko at the club and former Villarreal and Madrid boss Pellegrini is keen on Negredo to beef up the ranks.”
'Beef up the ranks' - now there's a proper football phrase!
