City’s bright young men go into tomorrow's Barclays Academy League game against West Bromwich Albion at Platt Lane as currently the best team in the land - and that's official.
Their excellent start to the campaign - six wins in seven matches - was capped by an impressive 3-1 away victory in last weekend's derby thriller.
Adam Sadler's team now have 18 points, the highest tally across all four Academy Leagues, and sit proudly at the top of Group C, four points ahead of nearest rivals Stoke.
Leading scorer Jordy Hiwula - pushing for a NextGen Series start - will be aiming to add to his tally of seven goals against Albion after his impressive opener against United.
Seven of the side that started the derby featured in the NextGen tie in Marseille on Wednesday, with a further two players coming on as substitutes late in the game.
Sadler said: "We'll have a good look at each player’s fitness levels and check that they all came through the midweek game unscathed.
“The important thing last week was the manner in which the result came. We were strong enough to see the game through; when United pressed for an equaliser we were strong and defended well.
Once we scored the third it became very difficult for them to get back into the game
"The goals came at good times throughout the match, which helped us a great deal."
There will be no relaxing against bottom-place rivals: "I know West Brom’s Academy well. They try and play the right way, so we know it will be tough despite what the League table says.
"The challenge for us will be to continue where we left off on Saturday. As long as we continue to improve and develop that’s all that matters for us.”
