City u18s visit West Brom for league opener

City u18s travel to West Bromwich Albion for Jason Wilcox’s first competitive game in charge.

For his debut season as manager, there is a new league format to replace last term’s three-tier system. This time around, all 22 participating teams have been split into North and South regional divisions.

The young Blues will face all those in the North League home and away, as well as taking on each side in the South League once either home or away as they battle for a place in the semi-finals.

Wilcox is targeting a strong showing as his team approaches the new season.

“I think we’ve got to aim to win the league and FA Youth Cup – as well as getting as many boys into Patrick Vieira’s EDS squad as we can,” explained the former England winger.

"We have to stress them as much as we can to enable them to go on to the next level. You don’t learn a lot from your success, you learn from your difficulties and failures."

The new boss welcomed a strong group of first year scholars this summer, who signed on for City in July.

Seven of the new group of thirteen made their u18 debuts while still eligible for the younger age group, while striker Denzeil Boadu got his name on the scoresheet for the Blues in pre-season against Radcliffe Borough and grabbed four goals in as many games for England u17s this month.

The boy Blues signed off pre-season with a morale-boosting 3-1 win over Rhyl FC’s first team. England youth international Kean Bryan was on target for City, with the other two coming courtesy of 18-year-old Louis Hutton, who is now featuring for Patrick Vieira’s EDS squad.

City will be aiming for a strong start to their league campaign, which brings dates with Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester City in the coming weeks.
