With the weather putting a stop to most of the league and cup fixtures last weekend, City Ladies hope for a brighter outlook this Sunday as they take on Charlton Athletic.
City last played Charlton in their second fixture at national level, coming away with a point after an eventful 4-4 draw. The last eight minutes saw both sides scoring twice with Charlton coming from behind on two occasions to level matters. The visitors currently sit seventh in the National Division table with eight points and two games in hand on City.
Charlton Athletic were previously known as Croydon WFC and their honours include two Charity Shields, 2005 FA Cup winners and runners-up on three occasions, two League Cups. Previous players have included several current and former England internationals, notably current England captain Casey Stoney, goalkeeper Pauline Cope, Eniola Aluko and Katie Chapman.
With a full league programme expected this weekend, a win for City will keep them cemented in the top four ahead of the second half of the season.
Manager Leigh Wood gave his thoughts on the weekend’s fixture:
“Charlton, like us, will get the ball down and play so we know we will have to be at the top of our game to continue our good run of form. It will be our third home game in a row and with two more to follow in the coming weeks and we will be looking to build on the six points we have already picked up. If we can start the game with the right tempo and are able to create the amount of chances we have in our previous two games we are confident of getting the positive result we are looking for.”
This weekend’s fixture will take place at the Regional Athletics Arena, M11 3FF with a 2pm kick off.
If you have completed the Santa Stroll why not stick around and catch the Ladies in action. Adults £2 entry, City Season Ticket holders £1 and Under 16s are free.
