Sunderland v City Ladies: Preview

A final trip of the season to the North East for City Ladies this weekend as they face Sunderland WFC in a rearranged match from January.

A serious injury to City Goalkeeper Danielle Brown brought an end to the original league fixture on 6th January. City were leading 0-1 with six minutes plus injury time left on the clock, when the Dani was caught by a Sunderland player after claiming a through ball. Dani is continuing her rehabilitation in her bid to be fit in time for next season, Dani and the club would also like to thank everyone for their messages of support that followed the injury.

This will be the third meeting between the sides this season, Sunderland narrowly edged City's home fixture 2-3 in September, whilst in the FA Cup 5th Round a clinical 20 minute spell by the Black Cats saw them into the next round where they lost out 1-2 to revamped WSL side Liverpool Ladies.

Recent results have gone against Sunderland, following the Liverpool game they crashed out of the League Cup at the semi final stage 1-4 to Leeds United and this past weekend suffered their first loss in the league in 18 months going down 2-1 to an injury time Gemma Sheppard penalty at Charlton Athletic. Sunderland Manager Mick Mulhern commented on the weekend's misfortune, "we started slowly and played our way back into the game. We were in control and pushing for a winner. Unfortunately we committed football suicide in our own box and that's an awful way to end an 18 month unbeaten league record, very frustrating.”

City Manager Leigh Wood knows his side will be in for a tough test:

"Having played Sunderland 3 times this season and with them having lost their last 3 games we know that we will be in for a tough game this weekend. After the disappointment of having our game abandoned last time with us being 1-0 up with 6 mins to go, the players have that added motivation to get a positive result this time. With back to back wins over Coventry and Cardiff in the last few weeks confidence is high and the players are really looking forward to the challenge."

Kickoff is at 2pm at the Hetton Centre, Sunderland, DH5 9NE. Follow LIVE match updates on twitter @MCLFC.
