City Ladies head to the North East this weekend to face Sunderland in the FA Cup 5th Round. The Citizens reached the same stage last season before losing out to top Women’s Super League side Everton.

This time out no WSL side awaits, however the Blues have pulled out National Division Champions in what is sure to be a very tough test. After the exit from the League Cup two weeks ago City will be looking to put things right against the division’s top side.

Still unbeaten in 18 months in the league Sunderland will be the favourites going into the contest. City were close to beating the Lady Black Cats in the first league match this calendar year, leading through a Krystle Johnston goal with just 6 minutes to go the Blues were denied a victory when a late challenge on City keeper Danielle Brown saw her injure her knee and require an ambulance to attend the scene. The referee abandoned the match after waiting 20 minutes for the ambulance to arrive.

We caught up with Leigh Wood on Tuesday after training:

"The players have worked well in training over the last two weeks putting the disappointment of the League cup behind them and are really looking forward to what should be a great cup tie.

Leading Sunderland by a goal to nil with six minutes to go in our league game before it got abandoned has really given the players the belief and confidence that we can go up there and get the win to progress to the next round."

Elsewhere in the Cup, the lowest placed side Oxford United have earned themselves a shot at WSL opponents in the form of Everton with their tie to be played at Oxford United's Kassam Stadium. There are all WSL ties as Doncaster face Bristol and Lincoln face last season's runners up Chelsea.

Kick-off is at 2pm at the Hetton Centre, Sunderland, DH5 9NE. Follow LIVE match updates on twitter @MCLFC.
