Manchester City’s young volleyball team arrived at the Premier League 4 Sport volleyball tournament with high hopes of success.

The event, played at Old Trafford, involved over 600 young people.

Both the A and B team were competing in the Under 14 girls section of the tournament. Having cruised through the group stages without defeat the girls were kept apart in the semi finals. The A team coasted past Newcastle United, winning 28-7 and the B team beat Everton 22-16. This created an all Manchester City final as the A team took on the B team on centre court.

The quality of both teams was commented on by both the Mayor of Manchester and the England Ladies volleyball coach. The  final finished with the A team claiming victory 23-20, by far the best match of the day. The Mayor commented on the high standard of both teams as he presented them with their trophy and medals.

Several of the City team have now been invited to a North of England trail day and will hope to represent their country in the future on the back of the training received, in part, through Manchester City’s Premier League 4Sport scheme.

Ruth Holland of Droylsden and Captain of the victorious A team said: "This has been a fantastic day and I am so pleased that both teams got to the final but fortunately we just won. I am so proud that I was invited to try out for North England and this will spur me on to continue training hard."

Manchester City’s PL4S volleyball sessions run 5 nights a week across Manchester, for further information email lee.mannion@mcfc.co.uk .
