Following on from the recent features on the Sydney Blues and NYC branch of the Official Supporters’ Club, we’ve been inundated by estranged City fans who want to share their stories and tell us what it’s like to be a Far-away Blue. Here is a selection of the most fanatical...
Steve Fisher and his wife emigrated to Vancouver Island (off the West Coast of Canada) last April and although it was a huge bind to leave his beloved Blues behind, Steve still flies the City flag with his 100% legal ‘MCFC’ registration plate.
‘Not many people out here know exactly what it means but I have had one or two people recognise the significance. I had to explain exactly what 'MCFC' was to the licensing authority in order for it to be issued!,” he told us.
Prior to leaving these shores, Steve and his son George were seasoncard holders in the East Stand at CoMS and Fisher senior was a regular for more than 20 years in the North Stand at Maine Road.
Another contender for the title of ‘farthest away Blue’ is Rob Smethurst who currently resides in Auckland, New Zealand having moved there in 1995. Since then, he’s managed to attend a handful of live games and, despite the distance, is still as passionate as ever about City.
Rob explains how he ingeniously managed to keep up with happenings at Wembley in ’99 on speakerphone during City’s crucial Division Two Play-Off game against Gilliingham,
‘There was no Sky Sports in those days down here so had to call my brother who lived in Hyde and he put his phone in front of the radio turned it up full blast and went out for two hours,” he explained.
We’ve also been alerted to some serious City-related dedication by Peter Bowden of northern Saudi Arabia who’s round-trip to fly home to see his beloved Blues involves flying Al Jouf to Riyadh, Riyadh to Abu Dhabi and then Abu Dhabi to Manchester. Naturally, Peter only flies with our official sponsor Etihad nowadays but manages to make around three games a season!
‘When in Saudi I never miss a match on TV, though that does have an impact on my work sometimes as Saturdays and Sundays are working days here! I’m already planning to be home for the Wigan away game and Fulham home one.’
Peter, we salute you! Are there any more stories out there we need to know about? Email mcfc@mcfc.co.uk
