Mike Summerbee had his liberty taken away from him last week - but it was all in a good cause!
The Club Ambassador was busted for "30 years of blatant self-promotion", with St Ann's Hospice the beneficiaries of the money raised to give him his freedom back.
Local business leaders were stunned when police interrupted a breakfast meeting at the Malmaison Hotel in Manchester that Mike was attending. An additional charge of "mentioning 'Escape to Victory' in every other sentence" was also chucked in for good measure.
The arresting officers were unimpressed with Mike's plea-bargaining, which involved sharing a table with him in the Boardroom Suite ahead of the Wigan game.
A sight many opposition full-backs would have loved to have seen back in the day - Mike behind bars!
The wheels of justice sprang into action quickly, but maybe we could have got Mike one of those "maverick lawyers who don't play by the rules" to defend him, like you see in films. But sadly this is the real world, and there could only be one verdict...
GUILTY!!! Thankfully, Mike's bail of £1,000 was soon posted with all proceeds going to St Ann's Hospice. If you would like to contribute, go to our Just Giving page.
