City are long odds-on with betting partner Paddy Power to kick-off the defence of their title with a win.
The Blues are 2/11 to beat Nigel Adkins’ side who return to the top flight for the first time since being relegated in 2004/05 after 27 years in the old Division One.
Roberto Mancini’s side became just the fifth club in Premier League history to lift the crown last season and Paddy Power make them 5/4 favourites to become only the third club after Manchester United and Chelsea to retain the trophy.
But the Saints will be eager to show that consecutive promotions were no fluke and a result here will set them up for the stern test they’ll face week-in week-out in the top tier.
City have the greater fire-power and their 3-2 win over Chelsea in last weekend’s Community Shield saw Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri on the score sheet.
Southampton striker Rickie Lambert (30) scored 31 times in all competitions last season and will be keen to open his account in the Premier League.
The 6’ 3” forward has scored 88 goals in three seasons with the Saints and was voted the Championship’s Player of the Year last term.
Paddy Power make him a 12/1 shot to score the first goal and 7/2 to score at anytime in the game.
Arsene Wenger's Invincibles are the only side to go unbeaten during the 2003/04 Premier League season - winning 26 and drawing 12 of their 38 league games.
Last Sunday’s 3-2 Community Shield win has City fans in the mood for more silverware and Sunday’s clash should be the first small step on the road to a rewarding season.
Paddy Power Prediction: Manchester City to win both halves 13/10
Paddy Power correct score: 3-0 at 6/1.
