City will bank on imperious home rule catapulting them into the quarter finals of the Europa League.
The Blues must overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit if they are to send Sporting Lisbon the same way as another Portuguese side Porto and reach the last eight.
Roberto Mancini’s men have won 18 of 21 matches at the Etihad Stadium this season and are priced at 2/7 by betting partner Paddy Power to make that 19 of 22.
The stats point to City being able to overturn the slender deficit. Unbeaten at home in Europe this season, the Blues have never lost to a Portuguese team on their own pitch in competitive action. Acadmica de Coimbra were beaten 1-0 at Maine Road in the quarter-finals of the 1969/70 UEFA Cup Winners Cup and Porto 4-0 in the previous round of this season’s Europa League.
The first time City faced Portuguese opposition in Europe we went on to win the aforementioned 1969/70 Cup Winners Cup. Paddy Power offer 3/1 for us to win this year’s Europa League.
Domestically this season Sporting have been inconsistent away from home. They are without a win in their last six away games in the league and in Europe they have managed just one away win in five.
Mario Balotelli caused Sporting problems when he came on in the first leg and he is 4/1 to score first if he starts in this game. The same price is offered for him to come on and score the last goal.
Sergio Aguero is the favourite to open scoring at 3/1, David Silva is at 11/2 and Yaya Toure 7/1. The Ivorian midfielder likes to get on the score-sheet in big games and has hit three goals in six Europa League games this season.
That City are such short favourites over the 90 minutes is unsurprising given the strength of the home form. However, punters who believe City will progress can make more of a profit on backing them to progress to the quarter-finals at 8/13.
The correct score offers the best chance of turning a small bet in to a big win with 3-0 at 17/2 and 4-0 at 14/1. Both of those score-lines would cover City -2 goals in the handicap betting, a line which they’ve beaten in nine home games since August.
