Joleon Lescott’s dream week continued as the defender was one of four City players included in Roy Hodgson’s 23-man squad for Euro 2012.
Lescott completes a City foursome on the plane to Poland and Ukraine with Gareth Barry, Joe Hart and James Milner as England look to advance beyond the quarter-final stage for the first time since 1996.
The former Everton defender will have the opportunity to add to his 14 England caps when their tournament kicks off on June 11 against Samir Nasri’s France. His last cap came in November last year in England’s 1-0 friendly victory over world champions Spain.
Gareth Barry is City’s most capped England international with 52 appearances, while Joe Hart has won 17 caps since making the number one jersey his own and James Milner has featured in 24 senior matches.
Glen Johnson and Phil Jones were called up at Richards’ expense, while Ashley Young, Theo Walcott and Stewart Downing were included instead of Johnson.
Rio Ferdinand’s miserable week took another nosedive when he became the most surprising exclusion from the 23.
Grant Holt and Peter Crouch's hopes of joining Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck in Eastern Europe also ended in disappointment as Liverpool striker Andy Carroll snatched the final striker’s berth.
City’s quartet will have the chance to stake their claims for places in the starting XI in friendlies against Norway and Vincent Kompany’s Belgium. After their opening match against France, England will take on Sweden and co-hosts Ukraine in Group D.
The FA also confirmed today that the pre-tournament trip to Malaga has been cancelled to give the players more time to recover from the gruelling Premier League season.
