It’s not every day that Sergio Aguero rocks up at your front door to deliver the job of your dreams.
However, that’s just what happened to Lee John Kenny, 24, from Stretford in Manchester, the winning candidate in our Mission Cityzen recruitment drive.
Lee saw off competition from hundreds of City supporters all over the globe to secure this once-in-a-lifetime post - shaping the club’s new global membership, Cityzens, which launches this summer.
Aguero knocked on at the Stretford address and took a tour of our shocked winner’s home, before handing over this most coveted of prizes: the staff-pass for Lee’s dream job.
It was a duty the Argentine World Cup star was only too happy to carry out.
“Without fans like Lee, there is no Manchester City,” Aguero declared.
“They are the heartbeat of the Club and the reason we are proud to wear the Club crest. It was cool seeing his collection of City tops, especially the 1988 top, which was the year I was born.”
Supporters from as close as Manchester, Stockport and Altrincham and as far afield as Australia, India, the USA and the UAE, applied for the post after they were challenged to send in a compelling video to outline why they were the perfect person to take up this new role in City’s Fan Relationship Management department.
From there, the applications were whittled down to a three-person shortlist – all of whom were invited to the Etihad Stadium for the next stage of the process: a series of challenges set by Blues’ luminaries, past and present, to prove that they were fan enough to secure this prestigious position.
This City-centric gauntlet included:
- Standing in the centre-spot of the Etihad Stadium, having to answer questions on the Club’s history, asked by none-other that City legend, Mike Summerbee who made 357 appearances for the Blues in a career spanning 10 years.
- Belting out their most moving rendition of City’s match-day anthem, Blue Moon.
- Demonstrating their silky skills by scoring a goal in front of Elite Development Squad Manager and World Cup Winner Patrick Vieira.
- Having to commentate on Sergio Aguero’s epic last minute goal against QPR to win the Barclays Premier League for the first time in 44 years.
After a video compiling their feats was posted on mcfc.co.uk, supporters were asked to vote for their winning candidate and Lee John Kenny was crowned the victor, earning the job and this shock visit from his hero.
Lee has supported City for more than 21 years and so could hardly contain his disbelief at this incredible turn of events.
“Sergio Aguero was literally the last person on earth I’d expect to see on my front-doorstep or in Stretford for that matter!” Kenny stated.
“Seeing Aguero in my living room sat on sofa where I have watched countless City games of him in action was totally surreal and amazing at the same time.
“Getting the job at City was a dream come true as it was, let alone your hero coming to personally give your staff pass. It was a surprise I will never forget. ”
