Spain’s march towards global domination at all levels of world football has taken another step forward.
Although the senior team are still dusting themselves down after Sunday’s defeat in the Confederations Cup final to Brazil, the under-20 selection are alive and kicking in the 2013 World Cup in Turkey.
Again, City EDS playmaker Denis Suarez had a big part to play.
In Denis’s previous outing for the Spain u20s selection, he set up the only goal in the 1-0 win over Ghana in the group stages.
In this tough Round of 16 encounter against Mexico in Istanbul, the introduction of Suarez with 20 minutes to play proved pivotal.
The 19-year old flicked on a corner after 77 minutes which was met at the far post by an unmarked Derik to level Mexico’s goal which was scored after just two minutes.
In addition to this contribution, Denis linked up with Suso, Alcacer and Jese to great effect and helped to turn the game in La Roja’s favour.
This increased pressure told, and Jese notched the winning goal in the final moments to put Spain through to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win.
They will face Nigeria or Uruguay in the last eight.
