City Blogger: The 12 Years of City-Mas

Christmas is all about giving, receiving and reflecting on what is good in your life. As Blues we certainly have a lot to be thankful for, especially considering what we have been given in the last 12 years of our journey.

Cast your mind back 12 festive Blue seasons ago, harking back to 2001/2002. City were en route back to the Premier League and little did we know what the intervening 12 years would have in store.

So when considering the last 12 years, Santa City could say, on the twelfth day of City-mas my Blue love gave to me;

12 – Seasons back in the big league. At Wembley 99 we were minutes away from the footballing abyss, yet since the start of the 2002/2003 season we have been ever-present at the Premiership feast, which considering the 3 relegations in the 10 previous years was something most of us would have jumped at!

11- Number of goalscorers this season. Remember City under Stuart Pearce, with the legendary duo of Georgious Samaras and Bernardo Corradi up front? Yes, that’s right, the team that didn’t score at home for 8 months. Well, 11 Blues have buried already this season. Feast on that!

10 – 10/10. The relationship now between the club and its supporters. We have a fanzone on matchdays, the best website in the business and constant consultation on the movings of the club. The people’s club.

9 – League victories over United. Since we regained our status in the Premier League we have beaten the Red side 9 times. As a child of the 90s, I certainly never thought I’d see the like. Derby Day, the scores were level… then the Goat was fed by Neville. Well, you know the rest!

8 – Champions League Victories. Ok, so our first two campaigns didn’t exactly light the blue touch paper. However, we have still chalked up 8 victories over the last 3 seasons in a competition that most Blues until recently thought ‘was just on the big tele with that theme tune’.

7 – Managers (including Brian Kidd).  So, I’ve included a caretaker here but you get the gist. We’ve had the frugality of the Pearce reign, the exuberance of Sven and the trophies of Mancini. And 7 in 12 years is better than the two per season we were averaging!

6 – Goals smashed at Old Trafford (should have been 10). 23rd October 2011. The “noisy neighbours” got their megaphone, climbed over the wall and destroyed the “Theatre of Dreams” like never before. Why always us?!

5 – Semi-finals since the takeover.  This is obviously inclusive of two FA Cup finals and a trophy, with more sure to come. The future is bright.

4 – The shirt number of our title winning skipper and our first title in 44 Years. Vincent Kompany wrote his name in City legend that day on 13th May 2012.

3 – Defeats at home in 3 and a half seasons. Remember the days when Charlton beat us at home 4-1 or we lost at home to almost extinct Stockport County? Well, we’ve lost 3 times at The Etihad in the last 3 and a half years. The ghosts of Christmas past are long gone.

2 – Legged tie against Barcelona.  What?!?! This says it all. BRING IT ON.

1 – League Title Agueeeeeroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo City – Premier League Champions 2012. Enough said.

So, from the Middle East, I wish all you Blues out there a Happy Christmas and a trophy laden New Year.
