John Guidetti scored a late winner as City's Elite Development Squad returned to winning ways against Wigan.
However, the gloss was taken off the victory when former Barcelona youngster Gai Assulin was stretchered off in the 90th-minute following a reckless tackle by Latics' Callum McManaman which led to his second yellow and resulting red card.
Guidetti was lively throughout for the Blues, but Wigan, inspired by Danny Redmond - son of former City skipper Steve Redmond - could have gone ahead before the Swede struck the only goal of the game.
Jordan Rugg's effort seemed to be trickling over the line on 80 minutes before Erik Johansen scrambled back to save the ball virtually on the line.
City's winner came three minutes later when Omar Elabdellaoui's shot was bundled in by Guidetti to the relief of the Ewen Fields crowd and the Blues now top of the Barclays Premier Reserve League.
As yet, there is no update on Assulin, who left the pitch in a leg brace, or the extent of his injury.
