City’s bid to win their group and progress to the Academy play-off national semi-finals was boosted with yet another victory at Platt Lane after a 2-0 win over Sunderland.
Goals from Jordi Hiwula and Marco Lopes gave Adam Sadler’s side their sixth win in seven games and wrapped up the young Blues’ league campaign at Platt Lane is style – the three remaining league games are now all away from home.
City were ahead after just seven minutes through a neat finish from Hiwula and Lopes went close to doubling the lead not long after as the Blues piled the pressure on the visitors..
Sunderland forced keeper Ian Lawlor into a smart save from a free-kick before the break to remind Sadler’s side that there was still a game to be won and Adam Drury responded with a fine run and shot that struck the Black Cats’ post.
Emyr Huws also had a chance to score when the Sunderland keeper’s attempted free-kick up field fell to his feet near the halfway line, but his attempt at firing a long-range shot into an unguarded net went well wide.
City ended the half on a high and after a spell of sustained pressure, Lopes fired the ball through a crowded box into the far corner to send the hosts in 2-0 up at the break.
Hiwula and the impressive Lopes both went close to scoring again after half-time but there was no further scoring in what was ultimately a comfortable victory.
