Goals from Jordi Hiwula and Courtney Meppen-Walter gave the Under 18 side three more points in a tough but entertaining game in south Yorkshire.
City looked slick and dominated the early stages, but after 15 minutes and against the run of play the woodwork saved them. Kennedy gave away a free kick on the edge of the area, and Kilburn's curled effort beat Lawlor but bounced down off the underside of the bar to give Adam Sadler's side early respite.
Top goal scorer Jordi Hiwula had fluffed a couple of half-chances when he went close to opening the scoring twice within a minute. Barnsley keeper Joe Martin was at full stretch to pull off a fine one-handed save to deny the City number nine, who drove a left-footed shot against the base of the post seconds later.
Both sides spurned golden opportunities before the break. The hosts broke the City stranglehold to cross from the right, but with just the slightest touch needed from close range Noble-Lazarus failed to make contact. At the other end, Courtney Meppen-Walter drove the ball at Martin, and Albert Rusnak slammed the rebound against the bar with the keeper stranded.
Barnsley were on the front foot after the resumption, but they wasted several chances in quick succession, the worst being Sousa's wild shot wide with the goal at his mercy.
The Blues made them pay, taking the lead on 56 minutes when Jordi Hiwula stooped for a diving header to convert Ashley Smith-Brown's teasing low cross from the right. The young Blues should have had the chance to make it 2-0 within seconds, but the referee waved away claims for a penalty after Hiwula was clearly hauled down by the keeper.
Barnsley enjoyed a decent spell of pressure, but City broke the shackles and should have made the result a certainty. Meppen-Walter found Hiwula in acres of space, but he elected to chip the keeper when he could have taken his time, the ball looping over the bar.
Both sides had further chances, with Clark dragging a good opportunity wide for Barnsley as time ran out. Rusnak skewed a shot horribly to the right, but it did not matter when City sealed the win on 90 minutes. Smith-Brown's clever run ended when he found Courtney Meppen-Walter, and his unstoppable shot tore past Martin from the edge of the box to give the Blues a fully deserved three points.
