City u18s recorded a narrow loss away to Fulham in a seven-goal thriller in the London drizzle on Saturday.

The Blues will feel much aggrieved to have come away with nothing as they enjoyed the best of the possession and large majority of the chances but couldn’t quite find an equaliser.

City were looking to extend their unbeaten run to five games, and reclaim top spot in the U18 Premier League North Division from rivals Manchester United.

Jason Wilcox shuffled his pack from the side that earned a last minute victory against Leicester. Angus Gunn came in for Billy O’Brien in goal, while there were also starts for Pablo Maffeo, Nathaniel Oseni and Charlie Oliver in a new-look back line.

Daniel Lema, Brandon Barker, Denzeil Boadu and Jorge Intima were familiar faces further forward.

City started immediately on the front foot through Barker’s driving run, although the ball was eventually headed over from Lema’s cross, and Boadu also saw his shot fizz just wide of the post.

The hosts, though, were to score the first time they got hold of the ball after six minutes through striker Moussa Dembele, who finished with aplomb after finding himself alone in the box.

Eager to restore parity, the boy Blues headed repeatedly down the other end. Jose Angelino saw his shot smash back off the post, Kean Bryan forced an excellent save with a curling free kick and Intima powered a header over the bar. Barker’s runs were causing the opposing defence all sorts of problems as he repeatedly turned away from his man to put the ball into the box.

Fulham’s best chance during that time was thwarted by Gunn, who made a fantastic stop from a dipping free kick.

But just before half time, the Cottagers struck again from the spot – Dembele gave Gunn no chance as he chipped the ball into the roof of the net for his and Fulham’s second.

Patrick Roberts made it three for the hosts shortly after the restart, but Intima stirred hopes of a comeback when he found the net almost immediately from the kick off. The Portuguese winger drove forward on the right wing and then cut inside before stroking the ball home.

Fulham added a fourth shortly after the hour mark to make it 4-1, but City didn’t let that stop them from creating promising chances at the other end. The two subs were keen to get in on the action - Dominic McHale put in sizzling cross that flew across the face of goal, and Ash Smith-Brown carved out a decent opportunity.

An own goal following excellent build up from Barker and Smith-Brown left the Blues in with a shout, and Kean Bryan saw his penalty saved.

Thierry Ambrose enjoyed an eye-catching cameo and got his reward with a stoppage time goal – a beautiful chip over the keeper after a lung-busting run from midfield.

An equaliser eluded the Blues, Wilcox will be pleased with a strong performance from his side.

Next up for the u18s is a home encounter with Reading on Saturday 21 September.
