Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Wednesday 14th August 1974
Franny Lee leaves City under a cloud having failed to win a new improved contract. Lee was reaching the end of an illustrious career but felt he had one last hurrah before hanging his boots up – he was right – and his new club Derby County reap the benefit as Lee helps the Rams to the league title club. Lee also scores on his return to Maine Road with a trademark 25-yard thunderbolt in a 2-0 win. Lee would return to City – though not until 20 years later - as chairman and owner.

The first competitive match at the City of Manchester Stadium ends with the Blues running out 5-0 winners over Welsh side Total Network Solutions (now called ‘The New Saints) in the first leg of the UEFA Cup qualifying round. Back in 1999 when the documentation for the stadium move was finally confirmed no-one could have predicted the first game played there would be in Europe with City only just promoted to Division Two. Fittingly, boyhood City fan Trevor Sinclair opens the scoring and so took the honour of the first player to score a goal at the Blues’ new home.

A Joe Hart wonder show earns City point at Tottenham and sets the Blues up for a solid season. Four of Hart’s saves in the first-half are world class and his display proves Roberto Mancini’s decision to hand him the No.1 jersey.
