Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Sunday 13 August 1978
City’s European tour ends disastrously in Holland with a 5-1 defeat against AZ Alkmaar with Roger Palmer scoring City’s consolation goal.
Though City had coasted past several Swedish sides and beaten Dutch outfit SC Heracles 3-2 five days earlier, the defeat is a clear sign that something isn’t quite right with the team that finished fourth in the league the previous May.
Even with five senior players are absent, the margin of the defeat is of concern to manager Tony Book and the frailties shown will re-emerge through what will be a frustrating campaign during the 1978/79 season.
