A crowd of 46,287 gather to watch City take on Portsmouth in the very first league game to be played at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Though the Blues had played a friendly and a UEFA Cup qualifying game at their new home, this was a landmark day for the club.
French full-back David Sommeil wrote his name into the history books when he equalised for Kevin Keegan’s side to take a point in a 1-1 draw.
Nigerian striker Yakubu became the first player to score a league goal when he put the visitors ahead by Sommeil’s 89th-minute equaliser saved the day.
