Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Saturday 31st August 1946
City play first game following end of World War 2 with a trip to v Leicester City’s Filbert Street. Wilf Wild’s side pick up where they left off seven years earlier by banging three past the Foxes – just as they did in the interrupted 1939/40 season, though in a 4-3 defeat. This time, the Blues don’t concede as goals from McDowall, Jackson and Walsh are scored without reply in a 3-0 win.
Wednesday 31st August 1977
Brian Kidd’s solitary strike is enough to give City a narrow 1-0 win over Chesterfield at Saltergate. Unusually, due to power cut threats, the game is played in the early afternoon but still attracts a crowd of 14,282, eager to see a City side containing no less than nine past or present international stars.
