Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.

City advance in the FA Cup third round after a five goal thriller against Birmingham City back in 2001.

First-half goals from Morrison, Goater and new signing Darren Huckerby were enough to see City dispatch their midlands rivals with a 3-2 win, despite the away side’s spirited comeback.

Trevor Francis’s men scored twice in the second half to make it a nervy last few minutes but City survived and made it through to the fourth round where they saw off Coventry.

That was as far as the Blues would progress in that year’s competition, as a trip to Anfield saw them go down 4-2 to Liverpool who would go on to win the competition.

Manchester City XI v Birmingham: Weaver, Edghill, Dunne, Morrison, Howey, Tiatto, Wiekens, Haaland, Granville, Huckerby, Goater.
