Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Monday 25th July 1977
Mike Channon signed for a club record £300,000 from Southampton. The England striker, famed for his famous arm-windmill goal celebrations was seen as the missing part of Tony Book’s jigsaw with the Blues missing out on the league title by one point a couple of months earlier.
Though his first season is not a disaster, Channon never seems to settle in Manchester and while his return of 12 goals from 33 starts puts him on par with Dennis Tueart, the team struggled in his second campaign and Channon’s confidence ebbed away. A few games into the 1978/79 season saw Channon return to his beloved Southampton in a cut-price deal.
