Memorable moments that happened on this day in City’s history...

Saturday 15th May 1999

The Blues played out an edgy second leg victory over Wigan Athletic to reach the Division Two play-off final. Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg at Wigan’s Springfield Park, the tie was finely balanced for the return at Maine Road. Wigan had a strong early shout for a penalty until Goater bundled home from a Terry Cooke cross. City ride their luck but they hang on for a victory which sends them to Wembley for the first time in 13 years.

Saturday 15th May 2005

Needing a victory to take the final UEFA Cup berth and complete an amazing turnaround in fortunes under new boss Stuart Pearce, City take on Middlesbrough at the City of Manchester Stadium. Boro need a point to take the final spot for themselves and take an early lead through Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, but Kiki Musampa levels for City in the second half. Then, deep into injury time, the Blues win a penalty and are suddenly just one successful spot-kick away from European football.  Robbie Fowler, with more than 300 career goals under his belt, steps up and hit possibly the worst penalty of his career and Mark Schwarzer saves easily. The game ends seconds later and a 1-1 draw means City miss out while Boro qualify.
