In 1990, Toffee at heart Howard Kendall leaves the Blues

Monday 5 November 1990

Howard Kendall quits as City boss for a second spell as Everton manager barely a year after taking over at Maine Road.

Kendall claims that City are like a love affair while Everton are a marriage, infuriating City fans, particularly as Kendall was shaping the Blues into a force to be reckoned with.

Defensively, City had become a tough nut to crack after Kendall had recruited amongst others Peter Reid, Alan Harper and Mark Ward, but the pull of Goodison Park proved too much for the former Toffees star.

As it was, it proved to be a poor decision with Kendall’s second spell largely disastrous while Reid stepped into the hot seat at City and continued the good work Kendall had begun.
