More than 10,000 City fans pack the Scoreboard End and see the Blues go 2-0 up by half-time. Without a win away to United for eight years, hopes are high, but two Frank Stapleton goals after the break change the complexion of the game and leave City clinging on for a 2-2 draw.
Sunday 23rd October 1980
New manager John Bond signs Coventry City winger Tommy Hutchison for £47,000. The skilful Scot had made 310 league appearances with the Midlands side and ‘Hutch’ will immediately become a big crowd favourite with the Maine Road faithful. Graceful and intelligent, Hutchison, along with fellow bargain buy Scots Bobby McDonald and Gerry Gow, help transform City from relegation favourites to FA Cup finalists.
