Sunday 26 October 1986
The Manchester derby is televised live for the first time to a national TV audience. Mick McCarthy scores to secure a 1-1 draw at Maine Road with a thumping header just moments after the Reds had taken the lead, but the Jimmy Frizzell-managed side ends the season with relegation. The result also leads to Ron Atkinson being surprisingly dismissed as Manchester United manager.
Tuesday 26 October 1994
Just 16,713 fans turn up at Maine Road to see David White score a late winner against Chelsea in the League Cup third round. The Blues draw Nottingham Forest in the next round, earning a 0-0 draw at the City Ground before losing the replay 2-1 to exit the competition and continue the club’s long wait for silverware.
