Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.

Saturday 13th September 2008

Some 12 days after arriving from Real Madrid for a British record fee of £32.5m, Robinho makes his debut for the club. Chelsea had also courted the Brazilian playmaker during his time in Spain and so there is no little irony that it was Felipe Scolari’s side who he first lined up against in City colours. It didn’t take long for Robinho to announce his arrival as his 13th minute free-kick put City in front and sent the home crowd into raptures. Though he couldn’t prevent his side being beaten 3-1, that goal began an exciting, if not controversial, 18 months at the club for the mercurial striker.

City reserves concede four times but still end up winning 7-4 away to Preston North End reserves to maintain their unbeaten start to the new season. Goals from Geoff Lomax, Duncan Davidson (2), Jamie Hoyland (2), Clive Wilson and an own goal.

Wednesday 13th September 1972

With 20 European ties in just four years, the Blues players and fans sorely missed playing against the cream of Europe in season 1971/72, so qualification for the 72/73 UEFA Cup was welcomed and gave the supporters a chance to once again dust off their passports and travel to exotic locations to support their heroes. Trouble was, Valencia failed to capture the paying public’s imagination and just 21,698 turned up at Maine Road for what was to be a cracking tie. Ian Mellor and Rodney Marsh scored City’s goals but the Spaniards left with a creditable 2-2 draw and won the second leg 2-1 to dump the Blues out at the first hurdle.
