Looking back through the history books for the events, signings and memorable matches that happened on this day in City’s history.
Saturday 22nd September 2001
The Blues travel to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday, hoping to improve on their away record of three defeats in their first four games of the 2001/02 – and turn in an unforgettable display with Ali Benarbia running the show with a majestic display.
Despite falling behind early on, goals from Benarbia, Shaun Goater (2), Danny Granville and Paulo Wanchope complete a 6-2 rout over the Owls that in no way flattered the visitors and delights the 6,000 travelling army. City move into fourth spot as a result of the win, six points behind leaders Burnley.
It was thrilling, breathtaking stuff that placed down a marker for the rest of the division – one nobody could get anywhere near!
