Pablo Zabaleta is not expecting a late call into the Argentina squad for the 2010 World Cup.

The Blues’ versatile defender has not had any contact with national coach Diego Maradona in the past few months and believes he is off the radar at present, having played no part in the South Americans’ final preparations.

With the 30-man provisional squad expected to be announced later today, the 25-year-old former San Lorenzo star feels sure he won’t be among those named.

“I don’t think there is any likelihood of a call up for Argentina,” he said.

I think my last chance to force my way into Maradona’s thinking was when we had a couple of friendly matches a little while back

“However, I wasn’t selected for those so I think my chance has gone, at least for the time being.”

Zabaleta enjoyed a distinguished youth career with Argentina, winning more than 75 caps at various levels. He has seven full caps to date, six of which were won during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, where he returned home with a gold medal having played in every game.

He made his international bow in 2006 alongside Carlos Tevez during a 3-0 defeat to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium – a game during which future City team-mates Elano and Robinho impressed.

“Obviously I would love to play for my country, but in truth I haven’t had any contact with Maradona over the past few months,” he said

“I was called into the squad last September for the World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Chile, but I picked up an injury playing for City and couldn’t play.

“If I’d have played, things may have been different, but since then I’ve heard nothing. It’s a shame but there isn’t much I can do except give my all for City and hope that, somewhere down the line, another opportunity arises.

“If and when it does, I’ll be ready.”
