Barry denied historic goal

Gareth Barry's historic headed goal against Sweden has been chalked off in favour of an own goal instead.

TV replays showed it was the head of Swedish defender Daniel Majstorovic that diverted Barry's glancing header into the net on 22 minutes - robbing the City midfielder the glory of netting England's 2000th goal.

Had the original header been on target, Barry would have etched his name into the history books, but it appeared to be going wide.

"I would have claimed it," smiled Barry, "but they've already given it as an own goal. It's a shame because I don't get that many, but the main thing is we won so I'm happy with that."

Former Blues' keeper Andreas Isaksson, now with PSV Eindhoven, was the man who had to pick the ball out of the net, while at the other end, City's only other representative in the starting XI, Joe Hart, was replaced by Scott Carson at the break.

Hart's first half clean sheet means he continues his record of having never lost while playing for his country - quite a feat

James Milner came on for Jack Rodwell on 58 minutes but Joleon Lescott and Adam Johnson remained on the bench as Fabio Capello made ten changes from the team that started against Spain.

Former City Academy star Danny Sturridge won his first England cap - making him the fourth graduate to represent the Three Lions with Shaun Wright-PhillipsMicah Richards and Joey Barton the others.

The 1-0 win over the Swedes means England have completed the year undefeated - the first time that's happened since 1994.
