Roque Santa Cruz was on target again in Spain, helping his Malaga side to an impressive 4-0 victory over Granada in La Liga.
The Spaniard continued his run of good form as an impact sub with a well-taken 85th minute strike – his third so far this season.
In the npower Championship, Jermey Helan’s Sheffield Wednesday side were unlucky to take anything from their home tie with Bistol City.
After going ahead twice, the Owls managed to let their lead slip on both occasions and a 3-2 defeat means they now lie second from bottom in the league table.
Thing’s look a lot healthier for Wayne Bridge’s Brighton in the Championship after their 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic leaves them sitting in 8th position. Bridge was involved for the full 90 minutes as the Seagulls twice came from behind.
Elsewhere, Oldham Athletic – temporary home of City’s Reece Wabara - recorded their first win over Colchester since 2002.
The Latics produced one of their most complete performances of the campaign registering a 2-0 victory in npower League One, moving them up to 16th place.
In Scotland, Ryan McGivern’s Hibernian lost 3-0 away at Inverness in the Highlands.
In other news, Emyr Huws played a full 90 minutes in Northampton Town’s 3-2 defeat at home to Cheltenham, Omar Elabdelloui was called into action in the 33rd minute as Feyenoord drew 2-2 with NAC Breda and Dedryck Boyata was left out of the FC Twente squad for their 3-0 defeat at the hands of PSV.
