Three Lions put five past San Marino

  • Posted by Nicola McCarthy

England breezed past San Marino in front of a packed house at Wembley on a night where Joe Hart had little to do.

City and England’s number one was more of a spectator as the home side completed the 5-0 routing in London.

It did however take longer than expected for the Three Lions to get going, but a Wayne Rooney penalty in the 35th minute broke the deadlock and opened the floodgates so to speak.

A further goal from Rooney, two from his Manchester United teammate Danny Welbeck and another from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain mean Roy Hodgson’s men now sit three points clear at the top of Group H.

On the rare occasions Joe Hart did touch the ball, it was greeted with raucous cheers from the home support and when Rooney left the pitch on 73 minutes, there was further applause when the City stopper was handed the captain’s armband.

City’s Joleon Lescott and James Milner spent the 90 minutes on the bench, a deliberate move by Hodgson perhaps, who has one eye on the mid-week fixture against Poland.

Meanwhile, it was a disappointing night for Jack Rodwell as he picked up a suspected hamstring injury as England’s U21s took on Serbia in Norwich.

The Blues midfielder was replaced by Blackburn Rovers’ Jason Lowe at half time in the Euro 2013 qualification play-off and is doubtful for Tuesday’s rematch.

Of course we will keep you up to date as soon as we have any more information on Jack’s progress.
