Joleon Lescott knows City’s title credentials will be tested by a rejuvenated QPR side on Tuesday night - and by one ex-Blue in particular.
Harry Redknapp’s side have steadily improved over the last month and their defence has tightened up considerably, but Lescott believes the main threat could come from a player the Blues’ fans still idolise.
“Shaun Wright-Phillips is one of those players who if you are not on top of your game he will punish you because he’s quick and agile so he’ll be someone we’ll need to watch closely,” said Joleon Lescott.
“I still think that he’s one of the most exciting players in the Premier League and capable of hurting any team. Loic Remy is another quality player – he must be to have played for Marseille in the Champions League.
We know he’ll be another threat and add to the task we face but we go there on the back of six successive wins and we’ll be aiming to make it seven
Though Rangers may be rooted to the foot of the table, their recent form is the 13th best in the Premier League over the past half-dozen games and they also beat Chelsea away a fortnight ago.
“QPR have done really well of late because they were shipping goals earlier in the season but they look well-organised and tight in defence under Redknapp,” Lescott opined.
“I don’t study other teams and how they defend as such, but because two of my close friends in Shaun and Nedum Onuoha are there, I’ve watched their progress with interest. Nedum’s back in the side and playing every week again which is great, so I hope they pull away from the foot of the table, though obviously after Tuesday’s game!”
Last season the Hoops pushed City all the way in pulsating encounter at Loftus Road. Lescott expects the same again as the hosts bid to lift themselves away from the foot of the table.
The Blues eventually triumphed 3-2, but had to come from behind to eventually take all three points.
“It was an intense game at their place last season but we thought we deserved the win over 90 minutes,” recalled Lescott.
We’re expecting the same this time and we know that if we’re not at it, they’ll find us out. But confidence is high and we’re looking forward to it
The popular City centre-back has had to be patient in his effort to reclaim a first-team place this season, though with 19 appearances in total so far, he has never really been out of the first-team picture.
“Yeah, I’ve not really been that far away from the team and I’ve been involved with most of the games we’ve played this month,” he said.
“I may not have started every match, but I’ve featured in most and played a part when I’ve been called upon."Follow @JoleonLescott
