We examine the prospects of Spain's David Silva, Javi Garcia and Jesus Navas ahead of Brazil 2014.

Silva

Age: 27

Caps/Goals: 71/18

International career to date…

Playing for both the U17 and U21 sides, David Silva made early impressions as part of Spain’s national setup.

The midfielder made his senior debut in a 1-0 home defeat to Romania in November 2006 and scored first for his country, netting twice, in a 3-2 friendly win over Greece the following summer.

In 2008, the Canary Islands native was part of the Spain squad who won the European Football Championships, a feat which they achieved again in 2012 - with Silva scoring the first goal in the 4-0 final win over Italy.

Merlin, as he has become known, also has a World Cup winner’s medal to his name after Spain overcame Holland in the final of the tournament in South Africa in the summer of 2010.

Will his nation be there?

Spain currently occupy top spot in Group I and show no signs of moving with three games left to play.

There is little to no doubt La Roja will be there to defend their title.

Who’s the competition?

Silva faces the stiffest of competition in Spain’s star studded midfield line-up which boasts some of the best names in European football.

Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla is perhaps his closest rivial for a spot, but there is also Cesc Fabregas, Juan Mata, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez as well as new teammate Jesus Navas to consider – among others!

International highlight...

Although Silva’s participation in the 2010 World Cup finals was limited, it would be hard to look past winning a world cup as an international career highlight!

Garcia

Age: 26

Caps/Goals: 1/0

International career to date…

After representing Spain at U21 level during the 2009 European Football Championship, Garcia finally gained his first cap for the senior team in May 2012, playing 22 minutes in a 2-0 friendly win over Serbia.

Will his nation be there?

Who’s the competition?

Like Silva, Javi Garcia faces a tough battle for a place in a squad bursting with talent, with Sergio Busquets, Cesc Fabregas and Javi Martinez perhaps his closest competitors.

International highlight...

Garcia’s senior team debut would have to be cited as his highlight to date and the midfielder will be hoping for a place in the World Cup 2014 squad to add to his list of international caps.

Navas

Age: 27

Caps/Goals: 24/2

Jesus Navas 2

International career to date…

Navas made his first senior appearance in November 2009 during a 2-1 win against Argentina in Madrid.

The midfielder scored his first goal for his country in June 2010 in a World Cup warm up game against South Korea. In the tournament itself, he appeared in three matches including the 1-0 final win over Holland as Spain lifted its first World Cup trophy.

He was also involved in several games for Spain during 2012 for the eventual champions.

Will his nation be there?

As above.

Who’s the competition?

Navas faces much the same competition as his new teammate David Silva, with with Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla and Markel Susaeta among those also competing for a place on the wing.

International highlight...

Navas came on as a substitute, playing 30 minutes plus extra time in Spain’s 2010 World Cup final winning match against Holland.

As the video below shows, he made a great contribution coming off the bench, helping Spain secure it’s first ever World Cup trophy.
