Sergio Aguero ensured Argentina remained firmly on course for next summer's World Cup in Brazil by scoring in the 1-1 draw with Ecuador.
Winning his 44th cap, the City star converted a penalty after just four minutes to give his team a 1-0 lead at the Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa in Quito - his 18th goal for Argentina.
Ecuador, with former Blues striker Felipe Caicedo among the starting line-up, levelled on 17 minutes through Segundo Castillo and had chances to maintain their 100% home record during this World Cup Qualifying campaign.
With no Pablo Zabaleta (suspended for this game) Aguero made way for Lionel Messi after 60 minutes and despite Javier Mascherano's late red card, there was no further scoring with the game ending 1-1.
Colombia's 2-0 win over Peru means Argentina's lead at the top is now down to just three points with Ecuador still in third, five points adrift of the leaders.
