Vincent Kompany came through a full 90 minutes unscathed as Belgium narrowly edged out Macedonia 1-0 to stay top of Group A.
The City captain has been absent for the past two months with a calf injury but returned to action with a typically solid display for his country.
Eden Hazard’s 62nd-minute winner was enough to keep the Red Devils on course for the World Cup in Brazil next year though Croatia remain level on points in second after two late goals secured a 2-1 win in Wales.
Also in Group A, Matija Nastasic picked up a yellow card during Serbia’s 2-0 win over Scotland. It was the Serb’s second group victory but they remain well adrift of Belgium and Croatia in third spot.
Costel Pantilimon won his sixteenth cap for Romania but endured a torrid evening in Amsterdam where Holland put four goals past him – two from United’s Robin van Persie.
The win all-but guarantees the Dutch a place at Brazil 2014 but Romania are still in contention for the runners-up spot in third.
Pablo Zabaleta had to settle for a place on the bench where he was an unused sub in Argentina’s 1-1 draw in Bolivia. Argentina remain clear at the top of their qualifying group but will be disappointed with a draw against their second-bottom opposition.
Ryan McGivern was also an unused sub as Northern Ireland lost 2-0 at home to Israel and former City favourite Mario Balotelli was on the mark twice as Italy beat Malta 2-0.
