Matija Nastasic: Teenage Titan

Matija Nastasic celebrates his 20th birthday today.

The quietly-spoken Serbian has had a superb first campaign with City and the maturity of his play has made a mockery of the fact that he has been a teenager for most of his first year at the Club.

Efficient and dependable, his impact for the Blues makes him one of the great teenage successes in the Club’s recent history

Nastasic has become a first-team regular since arriving from Fiorentina in the summer and such was Roberto Mancini’s faith in his new recruit, he pitched him in for his debut away to Real Madrid.

He’s now played 25 times in his first season in the Premier League and only has a career total of 54 senior games to date.

His passing range is as good as most midfielders in the Premier League and his composure is what sets him apart from other young defenders in this country. In fact, it would be a huge injustice if he isn’t among the PFA nominees for the Young Player of the Year.

The stats back up his worth to the team, too. The Blues have won 67% of the games he started as opposed to 45% when he hasn’t. City concede an average of 0.78 goals when he plays and 1.09 when he doesn’t.

City have also lost just three of the 18 Premier League he has started in. Impressive to say the least.

All this plus the humble and unassuming Matija is now a regular in the Serbia national team and has been keeping two international defenders in Joleon Lescott and Kolo Toure out of the Blues’ starting XI for much of the campaign.

Inevitable comparisons have been made between Matija and his fellow countryman Nemanja Vidic but though the United defender is a player he admires, Nastasic wants to be his own man and carve his own niche.

Composed, deceptively fast and with timing that any watchmaker would be extremely proud of, Matija Nastasic will no doubt play a central role in helping bring plenty of silverware back to the Etihad Stadium in the coming years

He is already recognised as an outstanding talent and one of the best young defenders in world football – imagine what he’ll be like when he reaches the grand old age of 23?

In the meantime, happy birthday, Matija.
