Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott and James Milner have been named in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for the friendlies against Brazil and Republic of Ireland.

The Three Lions host Giovanni Trapattoni’s Republic of Ireland at Wembley on 29 May before traveling to Rio de Janeiro’s newly-renovated Maracana Stadium to take on the World Cup 2014 hosts on 2 June.

England haven’t played Ireland at Wembley since 1991’s European Championship qualifier but will be facing Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men for the second time in four months after February’s 2-1 win over the Seleção.

Of course Hart saved a penalty from Ronaldinho in that match to help Hodgson's men over the line.

There was still no room for midfielders Gareth Barry or Jack Rodwell in the selection, while Micah Richards will also have to wait to add to his 13 England caps.

Other major talking points from the squad announcement include a first call-up for Reading’s Alex McCarthy, who so impressed in City’s 2-0 win at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday night.

Elsewhere, Andy Carroll has been recalled after a seven-month international absence and former Blue Daniel Sturridge has earned a call-up for his excellent recent form in Liverpool colours.

This pair of friendlies round off 12 months in charge for Hodgson and are the last fixtures of the 2012/13 season.

England return to World Cup qualifying action in September with fixtures against Moldova and Ukraine.
