Pablo Zabaleta has declared a good start to the Champions League campaign is essential as City aim to progress from the group stage for the first time.
The Argentine believes the Blues’ experience in the competition over the past two years will stand by them as they prepare to face the Czech Republic’s Viktoria Plzen.
“I think it's another chance for this club, for this team to do better,” he stated.
“What happened in the last two years in the Champions League has helped us to learn about it and now we will hopefully be better for it.
“It's important to win on Tuesday – to get three points in the bag, because then we have Bayern Munich. So a good start is very important.”
Manuel Pellegrini has a very impressive record in Europe’s elite competition, guiding Villarreal to the semi-finals in 2006 and taking Malaga to the quarter-finals last term.
Zabaleta is sure the new manager’s understanding of the competition will be of huge benefit this year.
"He's a manager with good experience of the Champions League and he did well with Villareal and Malaga. Now it’s a different challenge for him with a new team and we believe he can do well, “he said.
"I also believe 100 per cent in the squad we have here, we have very good players."
It’s a busy week for the Blues who face fierce rivals Manchester United in their next Premier League fixture on Sunday. But Zaba insists the team are taking it one game at a time.
“Yes, it's a crucial week - we want a good start in the Champions League and then we have United at home. But it's important to think just about Tuesday - it's wrong to start thinking about the derby now,” he said.
“We believe in this team and now we have another opportunity in the Champions League. I think this time we have a great chance to qualify for the knock-out stage.”
