Are the stars aligning for the best week of Fernandinho’s professional life?

The midfielder, who celebrated his 29th birthday on Sunday, has succeeded in his mission to claim a place in Luis Felipe Scolari’s Brazil squad for the 2014 World Cup.

Fernandinho has been one of the cornerstones that City’s race for the Barclays Premier League title has been built on, making 31 league appearances since joining from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer.

The Londrina-born star’s fantastic club form won him his first call-up to the national team in two years in March for the exhibition match against South Africa.

He certainly didn’t miss his opportunity to shine, scoring a stunning long-range goal – his first for his nation – in a comprehensive 5-0 win for the Seleção.

It was his sixth international cap, a tally he will hope to add to in June and July this year as Brazil bid for their sixth World Cup crown and their first on home soil.

Scolari’s men have been drawn in Group A of this summer’s tournament, along with Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon.

They get the competition under way at Arena de São Paulo on Thursday 12 June at 21:00 (BST) against Croatia.

The City midfielder will compete with Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho, Hernanes and Ramires for a starting berth in that clash but not before Brazil take on Panama and Aleksandar Kolarov’s Serbia on 2 and 6 June respectively.

Ex-City men Jo and Maicon also made the 23.

Full Brazil squad

César, Jefferson, Victor, Dante, David Luiz, Thiago Silva, Henrique, Dani Alves, Maicon, Marcelo, Maxwell, Fernandinho, Hernanes, Luiz Gustavo, Oscar, Paulinho, Ramires, Willian, Bernard, Fred, Hulk, Jo, Neymar

Fernandinho will also be in contention for a place in the starting XI for City in tonight’s pivotal encounter with Aston Villa - a match which could see the Blues take a two point lead at the top of the table with just one game left to play.
