Vincent Kompany revealed a competitive hunger among the City squad as they prepared to take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy in Hong Kong.

The City skipper told a pre-tournament Press conference that the team is still working very hard on fitness as they get used to life under new boss Manuel Pellegrini.

“We’ve worked very hard so far in pre-season and you can sense that this team is hungry,” Kompany declared.

“There’s been a great group atmosphere, but at the same time we have worked very hard. Everybody in the team is keen to learn; we need to learn how we can improve.

“Tournaments like this are very important us in testing our fitness and helping us to prepare.”

Assistant Manager Brian Kidd, who filled in for Pellegrini at the press conference, confirmed that the manager had returned from Chile following the death of his mother.

“Manuel has arrived back and he sends his apologies to everybody for not being at the press conference,” he said.

Kompany added: “The manager had to tend to a family matter, so it is very important. But we are a team and we deal with these things as a team.”

The captain also revealed that the new members of the squad have slotted in well after they took part in their first training session at the city’s Mong Kok Stadium on Monday.

“The level and the intensity of training we have been doing is extremely high and the new players have fitted straight in," he said.

“You can tell that the homework has been done and we have brought in some very good players.

“In training it is clear that everyone wants to be part of this team and that everyone is ready to compete.”
