Rooney backing the Blues

There is the usual eclectic mix in today’s Sundays which are so thick that paper boys and girls may all soon end up looking like Quasimodo.

Paul Hetherington in the Star on Sunday kicks us off with a welcome ditty featuring our neighbour Wayne Rooney who has admitted that the Blues have a great shot at breaking up the so called Big Four.

“Manchester City have started the season really well, they have bought some really good players. I can’t see a reason why they won’t be challenging along with Arsenal,” trills Wazza.

“The financial resources which City have at their disposal give them a really good chance. They have a chance to be up there in the top five.”

Or even four, three, two, or one Wayne!

Duncan White in the Sunday Telegraph is keen to draw the parallel that when City’s squad is packed with England players then the likelihood is that we will be challenging for honours.

“You know that you have made it as a big club when you get your very own England clique,” he writes.

“In the past England camps been divided between groups from Liverpool, United, and Chelsea.

City reflecting their accelerated growth into a major force could have as many players in Fabio Capello’s South Africa squad as their more established rivals next summer.

“It’s no coincidence that last time City players were well represented with the national side was also the last time they were competing for the league title (finishing fourth in 1977-78).

“City were a force for much of the Seventies but not until Sheikh Mansour came calling last year have they been able to consider themselves of challenging the best.”

The Sunday Mirror, meanwhile, turns the clock back a little less far and concentrates on an interview with Michael Johnson. Under the headline ‘Open Mike’ they chronicle the midfielder’s injury battle and his pleasure at being back and ready to prove is critics wrong.

It is a thoughtful and positive piece by Simon Mullock though here at mcfc.co.uk we do take exception at the claim that Johnno was speaking for the first time about overcoming his injury.

Those with a keen eye and decent memory will recall he spoke exclusively to us on the same subject after the reserve team fixture with Liverpool. Read Michael Johnson’s thoughts here.

Finally in the News of the World there are contrasting Robinho stories on one hand  Neil Ashton has him on his way to play for Barcelona but elsewhere David Harrison reckons that Robinho has been recommending Mark Hughes buy his Brazil teammate Ramires from Benfica.
