Summer sprees make us feel fine

We continue to take centre-stage in the transfer spotlight, which is bound to get even brighter now that pre-season training is upon us.

There were three new arrivals last week (given that Jerome Boateng became a City player on July 1st), and Simon Jones in the Mail is firmly of the opinion that we won't be stopping there.

"...they plan to conclude another £67m worth of business with Lazio's Aleksandar Kolarov, Benfica's David Luiz and Aston Villa's James Milner over the next few days.

"As Sportsmail has revealed, they are significant steps in what will be the biggest spending spree under taken by a British club in one summer, dwarfing the £120m they spent last year, and the piece de resistance is yet to be delivered.

"City fear they will miss out on Fernando Torres because of his preference for playing elsewhere if he leaves Liverpool, but the club have other strikers in mind.

"They have made a play for Wolfsburg's Edin Dzeko and were alarmed at the German club's £50m demands."

One of our recent acquisitions gets a glowing review from Sam Wallace in the Independent:

"Boateng, 21, cost City £11M when they signed him from Hamburg last month and has been impressive for Germany. He is chiefly a central defender and excelled against Argentina at right-back helping to neutralise the threat of Lionel Messi and Tevez."

Another City player to catch the eye has been Nigel de Jong. His terrier-like performances will come as no surprise to those who see him week-in, week-out, but he has a host of new admirers now. But as the Telegraph points out, the Dutch must do without him on Tuesday night...

"A bigger headache for Van Marwijk is the absence through suspension of Nigel de Jong. The Manchester City midfielder has been one of the Dutch’s outstanding performers in the competition, working in aggressive tandem with Mark van Bommel to screen the defence."
