Brothers Boateng are centre of attention

Football reporters at big tournaments have, by definition, to live in something of a bubble but The Independent’s Kate Holton seems to have immersed herself more than most.

Reporting from Pretoria today she files a lengthy and interesting article about Germany’s World Cup experience. In the worthy and thoughtful piece she centres on the brothers Boateng, their upbringing and their potential on the pitch meeting.

‘Germany fans declared Kevin-Prince as their ‘public enemy No1’, setting up internet chat rooms to vent their anger,’ she reports before giving readers a bit of history about the brothers. (Kevin Prince put Michael Ballack out of the World Cup with a tackle in the FA Cup final).

‘The Boatengs have the same Ghanaian father and different German mothers. Both grew up in Berlin but Kevin-Prince is the product of a tough working-class neighbourhood while Jerome lived in an upmarket district.’

All interesting stuff but slightly let down when the writer reports that ‘Jerome is reportedly leaving Hamburger SV to play for Manchester City’.  No Kate. He has signed for City and joins on July 1.

Holton’s piece is, however, easily the most original of the morning with the rest of the tabloids barely touching on the Blues.

The Mail and the Mirror report that Martin Petrov is now being chased by Aston Villa, Blackburn and Bolton after being released by City.

The Sun, meanwhile, centres on Yaya Toure’s possible move to Manchester to team up with his brother Kolo and also speculates on how Martin O’Neill may spend the money should he sell James Milner to the Blues.
