If I had been given a fiver every time the words ‘Yaya Toure’s move to City inched closer’ or something similar had been written this summer then I probably could have bought the Ivory Coast star myself!
The story is re-visited again this morning this time in the guise of an exclusive by David McConnell in the Mirror.
‘Yaya Toure’s proposed £27million move to Manchester City from Barcelona is all but done,’ he reckons.
‘And Roberto Mancini is confident of taking his summer spending spree past £60million with the capture of Aston Villa’s James Milner for £25m.
‘City’s medical experts were sent to Johannesburg after being given permission to attend Ivory Coast’s World Cup base to examine Toure
‘Toure’s move is expected to be confirmed within a week.’
The Sun’s Martin Blackburn picks up the Milner thread in his piece and also mentions Toure.
‘Manchester City will step up their pursuit of James Milner as soon as England exit the World Cup,’ he confirms without being unpatriotic and pointing out that could be as early as tomorrow afternoon.
‘If he (Milner) moves to England he is likely to be joined in the City engine room next season by Yaya Toure.’
The Mail’s ‘Screamer’ column also features Toure and Milner but centres on the future of Spain star David Silva.
‘Manchester City have agreed a £29million deal with Valencia for David Silva...City delegates have been in Spain to iron out the deal amid concerns that Chelsea may step in but are confident that everything is in place.’
Finally the Sun reveals that former City winger Martin Petrov has found a new home.
‘Bolton are closing in on the free transfer signing...the Bulgarian has had a medical and held talks with boss Owen Coyle yesterday,’ declares the paper.
