In all honesty, there is so much worthy of note in today’s papers that there isn’t enough time or space to fit everything in.
Derby day, it seems, has lost not of its lustre when it comes down to shifting copies of the Sundays and if you look hard enough you’ll find plenty to entertain you ahead of the game, not least Noel Gallagher’s claim that Mario Balotelli is the greatest living human!
But we’ll focus on the always-readable Henry Winter’s in-depth feature on City keeper Joe Hart.As ever, Winter delves that little bit deeper in his story entitled: ‘I always get abused – it’s part of the fun.’
He begins: “The Manchester City keeper shrugged. ‘I’d be angry if my team was losing like that,’ Hart reflected on the eve of Sunday’s resumption of local hostilities, this time in the FA Cup.
“An amiable character, England’s No 1 works hard at his craft, and is hugely competitive, yet little seems to faze him. Opponents’ barbs do not hurt him.
“He recovers quickly from his few mistakes. Hart handles pressure as well as he handles the ball.
“He exudes this City credo of belief without brashness, a philosophy embodied by the captain Vincent Kompany and espoused by those behind City’s success, good footballing men such as Roberto Mancini, David Platt, Brian Kidd and Brian Marwood.
“There is a desire to take fans’ brickbats in their stride, whatever the type of venom directed their way. ‘People can say what they want,’’ added Hart, recalling the United remarks.
‘They are going to vent their anger. I happened to be standing near them so I am going to get it. I understand that as a keeper.
‘It’s quite interesting to see what people come out with at times. People say crazy things. I’m like 'whatever’. I don’t take that personally.
‘I get abuse everywhere I go, in the street or playing football, but it’s part of the fun. I don’t think anyone means it. That’s football and that’s why I love it.
‘The Manchester rivalry is great. I love it. It makes the games what they are but I can’t get involved in that side. It’s not my business. I’m not trying to taunt anyone. I’m trying to win games.’”
It gets better, too – well worth a read…
