Defenders aren’t yet ready to relinquish their stronghold on the City transfer headlines, with Liverpool’s Daniel Agger now said to be a main target.

The Daily Star reports that the Blues have given up on luring Pepe away from Real Madrid and are now looking a little closer to home for an alternative target.

Denmark international Agger is also said to have attracted interest from Barcelona this summer.

“City have had a £20m offer for Real Madrid ace Pepe rejected,” Jack Wilson writes.

“They are now abandoning their pursuit of the Portugal man and could now focus on Agger.

“City tried to lure the 28-year-old to the Etihad last summer but had their attempts knocked back.

“It's understood Agger would be open to a move away but will not push for an exit in the same manner as Luis Suarez.”

On a similar theme, we brought you reports yesterday that Atletico’s new man, Martin Demichelis, could be a surprise target for the Blues, and the Argentine is now said to have asked the La Liga side to release him from his contract – that one is according to the Daily Express.

The paper’s Ben Jefferson notes that a regular starting berth at the Etihad could make the difference, although the 32-year-old would face competition from Vincent Kompany, Joleon Lescott and Matija Nastasic once the Serbian regains full fitness.

“Reports in Spain suggest that Demichelis has approached Atletico to ask them to terminate his contract and allow him to be reunited with former manager Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium,” Jefferson explains.

“Demichelis only joined Atletico last month after being released by Malaga at the end of last season and had spoken about his excitement at joining Diego Simeone's men for the upcoming campaign.

“But according to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, City have offered Demichelis a two-year contract and a place in the starting line-up to coax him away from Madrid.”

Edin Dzeko is flying the flag for strikers in our media round-up this morning, with the Daily Mail reporting that City are set to turn down any approach from Arsenal for the Bosnian striker.

The 27-year-old, who scored twice for his country against the USA last night, has impressed in pre-season and Manuel Pellegrini is said to be keen to hold on to his attacking threat.

Writes Sami Mokbel: “The Gunners have turned their attention to the Bosnia forward as they accept they are unlikely to land Liverpool’s rebellious frontman Luis Suarez, who has been their No 1 transfer target.

“But City boss Manuel Pellegrini has no intention of parting with Dzeko, having been impressed by the 27-year-old since his arrival at the Etihad.

“One reason Pellegrini decided not to follow up his predecessor Roberto Mancini’s interest in the Uruguayan Edinson Cavani, then with Napoli, was due to his faith in Dzeko.

“Whether a huge cash offer from the Gunners is enough to change City’s mind remains to be seen.”
